In July, Chief Instructor Richard Timmis travelled over 10,000 miles from the UK to Sydney, Australia, to pay his respects to Master James Chee and visit the Shaolin Wu Chu Chuan school. Swapping a sweltering British summer of 34ºC for a crisp Australian winter of just 5ºC, the voyage was more than a change in climate—it was a deeply meaningful journey.
Richard expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Master James and his students for the incredibly warm and generous welcome he received.
“I was overwhelmed by the kindness, time, and generosity of Master James,” Richard shared. “Everyone made me feel so welcome and went out of their way to show how they’re continuing to propagate these ancient arts for self-defence, health, and wellbeing.”
He continued:
“Master James’s healing abilities were truly remarkable. I felt deeply privileged to witness his skills being applied in such a positive and profoundly beneficial way.”
Richard also extended his sincere thanks to Mrs. Chee, who showed him great kindness and generosity throughout his stay.
Reflecting on the experience, he added:“I’ve been truly inspired by the depth and wealth of knowledge in Australia. Master James’s father, Grandmaster Chee Kim Thong, would be incredibly proud of all that his son has achieved.”
Richard looks forward to returning before long, committed to playing a part in preserving and promoting these traditional arts for future generations in the UK.
A special thank you also goes to Miss Tina Ng, who kindly accommodated him during his visit.
